  • In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil and add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, draining excess fat.
  • Add the diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing for 2–3 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Allow the sauce to simmer for 5–7 minutes.

Assembly

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and ricotta cheese along with half of the shredded mozzarella. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  • In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the cooked spaghetti, half of the meat sauce, and half of the cream cheese mixture. Repeat these layers with the remaining spaghetti, meat sauce, and cheese mixture.
  • Top your layered casserole with the remaining mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.

Baking

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt, bubble, and turn golden brown.

Serving

  • Once removed from the oven, sprinkle with freshly chopped basil or parsley before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, sauté some chopped bell peppers or mushrooms along with the onions and garlic. For a lighter version, replace the ground meat with lentils or mushrooms for a vegetarian option. Assemble ahead and refrigerate before baking for quick dinner prep.
