Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 cups unsweetened cocoa powder For bold chocolate flavor

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Must be at room temperature for best results
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar Adds sweetness and moisture
  • 4 large eggs For richness and structure
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract For aromatic warmth
  • 1 cup whole milk Ensures a tender crumb
  • 0.25 cups hot water To blend the cocoa smoothly

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan or an 8-inch round cake pan.
  • In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).
  • Add the eggs to the butter mixture one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the whole milk, starting with a third of the flour mixture.

Making the Batter

  • In a small bowl, whisk together unsweetened cocoa powder and hot water until smooth.
  • Take 1 cup of the vanilla batter and mix it with the cocoa mixture to create the chocolate batter.
  • Spoon half of the vanilla batter into your prepared pan, then add dollops of the chocolate batter on top, followed by the remaining vanilla batter.
  • Use a butter knife to gently swirl the two batters together to create marbled patterns.

Baking

  • Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For an extra moist cake, ensure your butter is at room temperature. Substitute buttermilk for whole milk for enhanced richness. Add chocolate chips for boosted flavor!
