Ingredients

For the Rolls

  • 1 package red velvet cake mix (regular size) Forms the base of the rolls.
  • 2.5-3 cups all-purpose flour Brings structure and volume.
  • 1 package active dry yeast (1/4 ounce) Essential for rise.
  • 1.25 cups warm water (120° to 130°F) Activates the yeast.
  • 0.5 cups packed brown sugar Sweetens the filling.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adds cozy flavor.
  • 0.25 cups butter, melted Provides moisture.

For the Icing

  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar Creates a sweet drizzle.
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened Enhances consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds flavor.
  • 3-5 tablespoons 2% milk Adjusts thickness of icing.

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • In a large bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, and yeast.
  • Pour in the warm water, mixing on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
  • Gradually stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a soft, sticky dough.

Knead and Let Rise

  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface, kneading gently just 6-8 times until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it to coat the top, then cover it with a clean towel.
  • Let it rise in a warm area until it doubles in size – this takes about 2 hours.

Prepare the Filling

  • While the dough is rising, mix the brown sugar and ground cinnamon in a separate bowl.

Roll Out the Dough

  • Once risen, punch down the dough to release any air.
  • Lay it on a lightly floured surface and roll it into an 18×10-inch rectangle.
  • Brush the melted butter over the surface of the dough, ensuring to leave a 1/4-inch border.
  • Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture over the buttered area.

Form the Rolls

  • Begin rolling the dough from one long side, creating a jelly-roll style.
  • Pinch the seam to seal, then cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
  • Place these slices, cut side up, in a greased 13×9-inch baking pan.
  • Cover them with a kitchen towel, allowing them to rise again until nearly doubled in size—this will take about 1 hour.

Bake the Rolls

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Once the rolls have puffed up, bake them for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Let them cool slightly in the pan.

Prepare the Icing

  • In a medium bowl, beat the confectioners' sugar, softened butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Add enough milk to create a drizzling consistency.

Finish the Rolls

  • Drizzle the icing generously over the warm rolls.

Notes

Tips for success: Measure ingredients accurately, ensure warm water is not hot to avoid killing yeast, and allow the dough to rise sufficiently.
