Ingredients

For the Beef Patties

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef Use a good quality ground beef for best flavor.
  • 1 large egg Egg helps bind the patties.
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs Breadcrumbs keep the patties moist.
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely diced Adds flavor to the patties.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Enhances the umami flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder For added flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Add more to taste.
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper Add more to taste.

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 cups beef broth Use low-sodium broth if preferred.
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour Thickens the gravy.
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced Sweetness from caramelization.
  • 2 tbsp butter For sautéing onions.
  • 1 tsp dried thyme Optional, but adds flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely diced onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well blended but do not overwork the meat.
  • Shape the mixture into 4-6 evenly sized patties, about 1 inch thick. Ensure they hold their shape well.

Cooking the Patties

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

Making the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, add the remaining butter and sliced onion. Sauté until the onions are softened and golden brown, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Simmer together for another 5 minutes to meld the flavors.

Serving

  • Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, drizzled with rich onion gravy, alongside your favorite side dishes.

Notes

For added flavor in your patties, try mixing in different seasonings like smoked paprika. Let the patties rest before cooking for improved juiciness.
