Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and honey. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast is frothy.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough begins to form.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  • For the chocolate swirl, melt chocolate, cream, and butter over low heat, stirring until smooth, then cool to room temperature.

Assembly

  • Punch down the risen dough, divide it into two equal portions, and roll each into rectangles.
  • Spread half of the chocolate filling on each rectangle, then roll up from the short side to form logs and twist together into a braid.

Final Rise and Baking

  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the loaf with egg wash.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients. Add nuts or dried fruit for variations. Brush with melted butter after baking for a glossy finish.
