  • 2.5 pounds sweet onions, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rings Approximately three large sweet onions
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 0.25 cup salted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 4 ounces shredded mild Cheddar cheese
  • 4 ounces shredded smoked Gouda cheese

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Arrange the onion slices evenly in the prepared baking dish and fan them out.
  • Sprinkle thyme, parsley flakes, garlic salt, oregano, dry mustard, and cayenne pepper over the onions.
  • Distribute small butter pieces evenly over the onions.
  • Sprinkle shredded Cheddar and Gouda cheeses on top of the onions.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  • Let the dish cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Consider adding a sprinkle of fresh herbs like chives or scallions before serving for a refreshing touch. Drizzle with balsamic glaze for added flavor.
